 | In The News ... The Lynx Golf Course, a MichianaGolf.com 5-Star Certified Course
If you enjoy the high-quality golf courses found in Northern Michigan, complete with tree top views and elevation changes throughout the course, then you'll love the Lynx Golf Course in Southern Michigan. "Lynx offers Northern Michigan golf, without the drive," states Lee Edson, Lynx General Manager / Head Pro.
The Lynx Golf Course, of Otsego, Michigan, opened in 1998 under the design team of Charlie Scott & Jon Scott and masterfully utilizes the natural elevation changes provided by mother-nature. Both Nines start and end at the highest elevation levels on the course roughly 90 feet above the Kalamazoo River Valley. Well-conditioned greens and strategically placed bunkers add to the fun for a challenging round of golf.
Your round starts with a short 321-yard, Par 4 into a blind green. Big hitters can go for the green at the base of the hill but must pay close attention to the bunker in front of the green as well as the area behind the green to avoid going out of bounds. Before leaving the green, take a look behind you and you will notice the slopes of Bittersweet Ski Resort, illustrating the many elevation changes that you'll soon encounter. Hole # 5 provides you with an uphill 528-yard, Par 5 to an elevated green that is surrounded by bunkers. The Front Nine ends with a short uphill 353-yard dogleg left with a well-positioned bunker at the bend of the fairway.
The Back Nine begins with one of the Lynx Signature Holes, # 10; a 411-yard, Par 4 with a 90 foot elevation drop and more outstanding tree top views. After winding through the trees on the next three holes, you arrive at the next Signature Hole, # 14; a 171-yard, Par 3 with an elevated tee box looking down at the Kalamazoo River running along the backside of the green. Hole # 15 is a long 566-yard, Par 5 running alongside the Kalamazoo River. And by no means do the challenges end there, # 16 is an uphill 361-yard, Par 4 protected by pine trees and bunkers near the green followed by another long 538-yard, Par 5 with a small "water hole" and marsh just to the right of the fairway, to better test your second shot. Your round ends with a short, but uphill, 347-yard, Par 4 to an elevated green providing many more tree top views along with beautiful views of the "glass walled" clubhouse.
The Lynx Golf Course provides many amenities including a driving range, chipping and putting practice greens, on course drinks and snacks, golf carts with GPS, pull carts, club rentals and a well-stocked Pro Shop.
After your round, there's no need to seek a 19th Hole as the Lynx Sports Bar & Grill is enjoyed by all -- golfers and non-golfers alike. As a year-round restaurant, you'll find everything from soups to salads, sandwiches to steaks, and a variety of beers on tap. The restaurant dining area is designed with 102 linear feet of 8' high windows giving an unobstructed panoramic view of the 18th green and, if that wasn't enough, it also features seven large-screen TVs. Outside the dining area, running the length of the building, is a very pleasant patio setting. This is a favorite spot for many well beyond the golf season.
Edson tells us that "many of our visitors come not only for our outstanding golf, but they also come to enjoy the great year around views from our restaurant including our Fall Colors Tour that's available October through November." As we can certainly attest, the Lynx Golf Course provides an enjoyable year around experience.

Otsego, Michigan, a little more ... | | |
Otsego is a city in Allegan County.
Otsego was established in 1831, called Pine Creek by its initial settlers: Giles Scott and Hull Sherwood. A post office was established in 1832 under the name of Allegan, the name being changed to Otsego in 1835 with the organization of Allegan County, spearheaded by Otsego resident Dr. Samuel Foster. 1833 brought a school to the new town, and a hotel - the Tompkins House - followed in the 1860s.
In the 1870s, visitors from all over the Midwest journeyed to Otsego to experience the "medicinal" waters at the Otsego Mineral Springs Bath House, which remained a regional draw until 1887 when George Bardeen's paper mill operation depleted the town's mineral springs.
The 1880s saw some big advances for Otsego. In 1881, Wilson C. Edsell built the town's first bank and opera house. Edsell's Opera House was the primary entertainment venue in town for many years until the opening of the Nickelodeon (Irv Nichols's theatre venture) in 1909. An Uncle Tom's Cabin troupe played the Opera House stage on an annual basis. Native American vaudeville shows, called medicine shows, were also popular. Maro the Magician, Stock theatre groups, minstrel shows took the opera house stage on a regular basis, with the minstrel shows led by the town's one African American resident Jim Smith. In 1883, Otsego High School held its first commencement ceremony, graduating three students; A home-delivery milk route was started up in 1885; and 1886 brought the establishment of the volunteer fire department still in operation today, but no longer using horse-drawn water-wagons. The decade closes out with the formation of the city's Republican Club in 1888.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 square miles, of which, 2.0 square miles of it is land and 0.1 square miles of it (3.86%) is water.
